Tom O'Brien brought in an unusual double on Friday as he managed to win the title at Exeter before heading off to attend the birth of his second child.

O'Brien all but gave up the 2-1 favourite longlegs coached by his boss Philip Hobbs in the 2m3f handicap chase, but with the encouragement of wife Hayley O'Brien had time for 18 years of success, then She rushed to the hospital to be by her side when the couple's second son, Toby, was born.

Reliving one of the most unusual and longest days of his life, O'Brien said: "The delivery started at 4am on Friday and I took Hailey to the hospital at 8am but she was sent home, I don't think anything will happen.

"Then they got stronger so I took them to hospital before Exeter. She texted me in the car park saying it was coming soon so I don't know if I should turn around and go back.

"My wife told me to stay and ride, but I was hesitant. Luckily the horse won and I got back to the hospital in time and everything went well. I arrived at 5pm and Toby at 7pm."

O'Brien reports that the mother and baby are doing well in their own home, a 30-minute drive from Exeter Racecourse, where Toby has met his 15-month-old brother Archie.
