These 2.75 million egg-laying chickens are all located in Wisconsin.
The decision to cull the birds was made after the avian flu was detected by testing.
According to reports,
the detected strain of
avian flu is extremely deadly.
Altogether, the number of culled chickens and turkeys in the U.S. since February has reached 6.7 million birds.
The outbreak is the most severe in seven years.
In 2015, avian flu resulted in the deaths of almost 50 million birds in the U.S.
Due to the outbreaks, poultry exports from the U.S. have been curtailed.
Both Mexico and China
have refused American exports
that originate in states where
the outbreaks have occurred.
The U.S. is not the only nation currently experiencing avian flu outbreaks across its poultry farms.
