The Union government has amended the Census Rules framed in 1990 to allow the details to be captured and stored in an electronic format and also to enable self-enumeration by respondents. The decennial Census exercise, which was indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be held for the first time both in the digital mode and through paper schedules (questionnaire/forms).

सरकार ने जनगणना संबंधी नियमों ( Census New Rules) में बड़ा बदलाव किया है, अगर देश के नागरिक चाहें तो आगामी जनगणना में ऑनलाइन (National Population Register Online) जानकारी दे सकेंगे। और पहले की तरह जनगणना के लिए जानकारी जुटाने टीमें घर-घर भी जाएंगी। ये घोषणा 2020 में की गई थी, लेकिन अब नियमों के जरिए अधिसूचित की गई है। केंद्रीय गृह मंत्रालय द्वारा बदले गए जनगणना नियम 2022 ( census 2022) के मुताबिक, पहले के किसी भी प्रविधानों को प्रभावित किए बिना कोई भी व्यक्ति स्व-गणना के माध्यम से जनगणना अनुसूची को भर सकता है और जमा कर सकता है।
