Freedom's choice for Afghans: Over the wall or through the desert

Zaranj, a city in North Western Afghanistan, sits on the border with Iran. Amid a roar of engines and clouds of dust, desperate migrants clamber into pickup trucks ready for a perilous drive through the desert, with the singular goal of crossing the border into Iran. Afghanistan has been plunged into a financial crisis following the Taliban takeover seven months ago, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation after decades of war.
