Despite surging numbers of coronavirus infections, Indonesia reopened the resort island of Bali on February 16, 2022. The island province had been closed to foreign travellers for more than a year during the pandemic. It resulted in a massive slowdown in Bali’s tourism industry compared to 2019, when it hosted 6.2 million foreign visitors. Meanwhile, across the Indonesian archipelago, 64,718 new coronavirus infections were recorded on February 16, 2022.
