Illinois is The First State to Require Asian American History to be Taught in School

On July 9 2021, Illinois governor JB Pritzker set a new standard by making it mandatory for publicschools to include a unit on Asian American history.
"Today, we are reaffirming our commitment to creating more inclusive school environments. We're making Illinois the first state in the nation to require that Asian American history will be taught in public schools, including a unit about the Asian American experience." Yahoo News reports that the Teaching Equitable Asian American History Act (TEAACH Act) was introduced by Sen. Ram Villivalam and Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz.
The new bill is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2022.
Units will cover Asian Americans’ contributions to the economic, cultural, social and political development of the United States from the 19th century onward.
