Church gears up against Opol casino sans street protests due to COVID-19 threat

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro is treading on unchartered territory as it flexes its muscles to pressure the government into stopping casino operations in the town of Opol in Misamis Oriental sans street demonstrations due to the threat posed by COVID-19.

A veteran of anti-casino protests in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental since the '90s, Monsignor Rey Manuel Monsanto, a consultor and member of the archdiocese's presbyteral council, talks to Rappler about how the anti-casino movement would face the new challenge.
