Chhath, the great festival of worship of Lord Surya, has started today from November 8. This great festival starts from the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. Chhath festival is celebrated with great pomp in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. During Chhath, women observe a strict fast of about 36 hours. During Chhath Chhath Mayya and Sun God is worshipped. Soop has a special significance in the worship of this four-day long festival.

भगवान सूर्य की उपासना का महापर्व छठ (Chhath) की शुरूआत आज यानी 8 नवंबर से नहाय-खाय के साथ हो गई है। इस महापर्व की शुरुआत कार्तिक मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्थी तिथि से हो जाती है। पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश (Uttar Pradesh), बिहार (Bihar) और झारखंड (Jharkhand) में छठ का महापर्व बड़े ही धूम-धाम से मनाया जाता है. छठ के दौरान महिलाएं लगभग 36 घंटे का कठिन व्रत रखती हैं। छठ के दौरान छठी मईया और सूर्यदेव की पूजा-अर्चना होती है। चार दिन तक चलने वाले इस पर्व की पूजा में सूप (Soop) का विशेष महत्व है।
