Southeast Asia has a rich filmmaking history, thanks to trailblazers like Indonesia’s Garin Nugroho, Thailand’s Wisit Sasanatieng, and the Philippines’ Lav Diaz. The tradition continues with a whole new generation of auteurs, from Indonesia’s Joko Anwar and Singapore’s Anthony Chen to Thailand’s Nattawut Poonpiriya and Malaysia's Quek Shio Chuan. In this session, panelists discuss how Southeast Asian cinema is flourishing in a new era of international recognition, growing cultural capital and burgeoning creative freedom, as well as the challenges that remain.
