A bronze statue tribute to author, playwright and teacher Barry Hines has been unveiled by star of the iconic film ‘Kes’ Dai Bradley and famed director Ken Loach in Barnsley town centre.
It stands outside the Alhambra shopping centre .
It is the brainchild of Ronnie Steele, ex-pupil of Barry Hines, who set up a committee to orchestrate the project in the 50th anniversary year of the release of the book ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’.
Celebrated sculptor Graham Ibbeson (Benny Hill, Eric Morecambe, Laurel and Hardy, Dickie Bird, Les Dawson, Victoria Wood) offered his services gratis.
The project has been funded by worldwide donations given out of love and respect for the work of Barnsley born Barry who died from Alzheimer’s in 2016. Other members of the committee are sales organiser Janet Richardson, treasurer Jan Brears, Carl Yeates, Kris Branigan and novelist Milly Johnson.
