He dressed her in different costumes and made her sit outside the door with a bowl for candies. The man made it look like she turned up for trick or treat at his door. So whenever the doorbell rang, he saw the dressed-up dog and put candies into the bowl. He made it all the cuter by adding sounds whenever she moved her mouth to make it seem like she was talking.
