We live in a highly connected world, where infectious diseases are finding opportunities to spread globally as never before in human history. This raises new public health challenges for epidemiologists, physicians, and biologists involved in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases. Mathematical and computational models can contribute to this interdisciplinary and concerted effort. They can make short-term predictions about the progression of epidemics, help analyze scenarios about the outcome of the epidemic and inform about the impact of public health interventions.
