UK Steel, a lobbying group for the industry, warned that rising energy prices and supply chain issues could cause major shutdowns across the country. Noting a shortage of natural gas in Europe that’s caused electric and gas prices to soar, UK Steel’s briefing document said that facilities may need to shut down “for increasingly extended periods with the consequences not only for individual companies but also UK steel supply to the UK economy and UK jobs.” As of press time, the UK government was still looking into ways it could help “energy-intensive” industries.
