Facebook Explains Yesterday’s Outage

Facebook ($FB@US) said it believes a faulty configuration change caused the widespread outage that lasted roughly six hours yesterday. According to the company, configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between its data centers caused issues that interrupted communication, bringing services to a halt. The outage also impacted tools Facebook employees use. It hasn’t found any evidence that user data was compromised during the blackout. Other apps owned by Facebook were also impacted, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger.
