The New South Wales government insists that it is safe for thousands of cricket fans to attend the New Year’s Test in Sydney, despite a spike in Covid-19 cases and further restrictions on outdoor events that have led to calls for the match to be played behind closed doors. The third Test match against India starting on 7 January would go ahead at the Sydney Cricket Ground as planned with an expected reduced capacity of 50% – around 24,000 spectators.
