Startup Wants To Resurrect Wooly Mammoths By 2027
  • 3 years ago
Colossal is a new startup that plans to bring the woolly mammoth back from extinction with its CRISPR technology, a revolution in gene editing. The company hopes to reach this goal by 2027. The plan isn’t to recreate actual woolly mammoths but to bring their cold-adapted genetic traits like small ears and more body fat to their elephant cousins. Colossal hopes to create a hybrid that can wander the tundra where mammoths haven’t been seen for 10,000 years. Colossal hopes its work will draw attention to biodiversity problems and ultimately help fix them. The company has raised $15 million so far. The startup and its 19 employees are based in Dallas and have offices in Boston and Austin, Texas.
