Coral reefs cover less than 0.1% of the planet but are home to a quarter of all marine species. Stephanie Wear, a marine ecologist, says scientists isolate the unique compounds that enable corals and coral-based creatures to communicate and have used those compounds to treat an overwhelming number of illnesses and bacterial infections.
