When there is an injury or wound on the skin, scar tissue is formed in the body to fill it. The job of these scar tissue is to fill the wound and make the skin as before. Sometimes these scar tissue does not stop forming even after healing the wound and continues to form for a long time. Due to this, the shape that emerges up to the top of the skin is formed. This extra protruding shape is called a keloid. The growth of keloid sometimes lasts for years and sometimes they stop growing after a few months. As long as keloids continue to grow, they may itch or feel a little sore. These symptoms get better when the keloid stops growing. Keloids are neither dangerous nor do they have any adverse effect on health. But they don't look good. There may be some embarrassment if they happen to be in a place on the body where it is difficult to hide them. For this reason people are inclined to get their treatment done. That is, the treatment of keloid is cosmetic treatment.

जब त्वचा पर चोट या घाव होता है तो उसे भरने के लिए शरीर में स्कार टिशु बनते हैं । इन स्कार टिशु का काम घाव को भरकर त्वचा को पहले जैसा बनाने का होता है। कभी कभी ये स्कार टिशु घाव भरने के बाद भी बनना बंद नहीं होते और लम्बे समय तक बनते रहते हैं। इस वजह से त्वचा के ज्यादा ऊपर तक उभर आने वाली आकृति बन जाती है। यह अतिरिक्त उभर आने वाली आकृति ही केलोइड कहलाती है। केलोइड का बढ़ना कभी कभी वर्षों तक चलता रहता है और कभी कुछ महीने बाद इनका बढ़ना रुक जाता है। जब तक केलोइड बढ़ते रहते हैं तब तक उनमें खुजलाहट या थोडा दर्द महसूस हो सकता है। ये लक्षण केलोइड बढ़ना बंद होने पर ठीक हो जाते हैं। केलोइड ना तो खतरनाक होते हैं और ना ही इनसे स्वास्थ्य पर कोई विपरीत प्रभाव पड़ता है। लेकिन ये दिखने में अच्छे नहीं लगते हैं। यदि शरीर पर किसी ऐसी जगह पर हो जाये जहाँ इन्हें छुपाना मुश्किल हो तो थोड़ी शर्मिंदगी महसूस हो सकती है। इसी कारण से लोग इनका इलाज करवाने के इच्छुक होते है। अर्थात केलॉइड का उपचार कॉस्मेटिक ट्रीटमेंट होता है।
