On Thursday, August 12, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, spoke to the media during a press conference about COVID-19 in Canada.

Dr. Tam said that "the latest national surveillance data indicates that a fourth wave is underway in Canada and that cases are plotting along a strong resurgence trajectory."

She noted that about 1,500 new COVID-19 cases are being reported each day in the country, though, she said that "the number of deaths remain low, with an average of seven deaths being reported daily."

The majority of the new cases are in people aged 20 to 39 and she urged young adults to increase vaccine coverage as soon as possible.

As of Friday, August 13, there are 14,737 active COVID-19 cases in the country. There were 2,140 new cases reported yesterday, further indicating the upward trajectory.
