The 15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup launched by mid ranking army officers in Bangladesh on 15 August 1975. The officers planned to remove the secular government of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with an Islamic government led by Khandaker Mushtaque Ahmed.

The first president of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (also known as Sheikh Mujib, Bangabandhu or just Mujib) and most of his family were killed during the early hours of 15 August 1975, when a group of young Bangladesh Army personnel went into his residence and assassinated Sheikh Mujib as part of a coup d'état.[1] On the morning of 15 August 1975, a group of members of the Bangladesh Army staged a military coup and killed Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family at his Dhanmondi 32 residence. Later, from 15 August 1975 to 8 November 1975, Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmed unannouncedly assumed the office of President of Bangladesh. The assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman marked the first direct military intervention in Bangladesh's civilian administration-centric politics.[2] August 15 is currently observed as the 'National Mourning Day' in Bangladesh.
