1) Take more responsibility.

4) Be proactive, not reactive.

While it is unrealistic to assume that you will never have to make a quick decision in front of your boss, proactive employees try to control situations by taking an active and leading role, rather than waiting passively and responding to events once they have happened.

5) Do more with fewer resources.

Part of being an outstanding employee is being able to adapt to the changes in the industry and the company that, at some point, you will have to face. Let's say your company has an unexpected expense or an important team member unexpectedly resigns. That could really affect budget and capacity.

For some employees, these events could spell a big problem (one they could use as an excuse for not reaching their goals). But the best employees find a way to do more with fewer resources, and truly exceptional employees find a way to get better results with fewer resources.
