An opinion poll shows that a majority of Brazilians support impeaching President Jair Bolsonaro. According to the survey conducted by Datafolha, 54 percent of Brazilians support a proposed move by the country’s lower house to open impeachment proceedings while 42 percent oppose it. People have been holding protests across Brazil for months, slamming the president’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, a Supreme Court judge authorized an investigation into Bolsonaro for dereliction of duty over procuring an Indian Covid-19 vaccine. Suspicions of overpricing and corruption related to the contract have been cited for the allegation. Brazil has the world’s second highest Covid death toll, with nearly 533,000 fatalities. On Saturday, Brazil registered more than 48,000 new daily cases with over 1,200 deaths.
