Mexico Decriminalizes, Recreational Marijuana Use.
On Monday, Mexico’s Supreme Court
decisively ruled to decriminalize recreational
marijuana in the country. .
Medical marijuana
has been legal in
Mexico since 2017. .
The 8-3 ruling came after a bill signed by
Mexico's President Andres Manuel López Obrador
struggled to advance through Congress. .
After failing to meet the
set deadline, the court moved
to vote down laws that previously
criminalized marijuana use. .
In order to legally obtain cannabis, citizens over 18 years
of age can apply for a permit from the Federal Commission
for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris).
Once obtained, they can legally possess
up to 28 grams of cannabis.
Permits can also be obtained from Cofepris for the
legal cultivation and harvesting of marijuana plants.
