This is no event or a walkathon. These are hundreds of angry villagers making a people’s representative walk and witness their plight. Basanti Hembram, the MLA of Karanjia was reportedly forced by some protesting villagers to walk kilometers to visit the area that has been a bearing the brunt of human-elephant conflict. These villagers allegedly took the step to highlight the negligence of the concerned authorities.

This incident took place when villagers from the Karanjia wildlife division blocked the National Highway (NH) 220 in front of Dudhiani Range office. They were protesting against the delayed and inadequate compensation for damages to property caused by elephants.

This is when the villagers spotted the vehicle of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA who was trying to navigate through the crowd, allegedly ignoring their cause. Following this snub, a large group of women protestors stopped her vehicle and made her walk up to Kada Modaka village, about 7 km from the spot to show the damages inflicted by the elephants.

However, Hembram refuted the claims that villagers forced her to walk and said she walked with the protestors voluntarily in solidarity.
