Will Biju Patnaik’s famed Dakota aircraft turn to dust? Have a look, how Biju babu’s favourite Dakota aircraft is lying unattended outside the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.
This is the same Dakota DC–3 aircraft which Biju Patnaik flew in 1947 in a daring act to rescue Indonesia’s former Vice President and Prime Minister during the Indonesian War of Independence.
These images are three years old. After the 2019 Fani Cyclone, the Dakota Aircraft suffered even more damage. It is said that most of its parts are ruined.
So can Odisha salvage its legendary leader’s badge of bravery?
Would it ever come to Odisha?
Biju Patnaik’s Dakota DC – 3 was in a hangar in Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport for almost 50 years. But for last 15 years, Dakota has been removed from the hangar and left to rust under the open sky.
The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has tried to draw the attention of the state government with regards to how Dakota could be brought back to Odisha. After constituting one team, the Odisha government formed another committee on November 20 to bring back Dakota from Kolkata. But it remains to be seen if Odisha is able to get the Dakota aircraft that symbolises the bravery of its legendary leader Biju Patnaik.
