To mark the National Handloom Day, on Friday, Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani shared photos of herself dressed in Handloom products. Several celebrities also posted photos on social media. Just a few days prior though, on July 27, The textile Ministry scrapped the All India Handloom Board and then, on August 3, abolished the All India Handicrafts Board. The Ministry said they did this to strive for a ‘leaner government’ apparatus. The move has drawn severe criticism from those working for the promotion of Indian handicrafts.
