The Global Cosmetic Industry's Mica Demand Is Pushing Lakhs of Indian Children Into Child-Labour

The daily routine for Komal Devi and her five-year-old son Raju is to dig for mica in the mines near their home. They do this illegally. In the 1980s a law was passed in India which limited deforestation in the area. Following which, over 700 legal mines were shut-down. The companies left but the mines remained. Without any alternate source of income, the indigenous tribes in the area were left unemployed and they now illegally dig mica from the mines. Both Komal Devi's children work at the mines with her. The more a family digs, the more money they get from the middlemen.
