Farmers Block the Jaipur-Delhi Highway: How It Started

For nearly three weeks, farmers' unions have blocked the highway connecting Jaipur to New Delhi. It is the latest step to force the repeal of the Modi government's farm laws.
While protesters from Punjab led the major protest at Singhu and Tikri, farmers from Rajasthan, Haryana and Maharashtra arrived at Shajahanabad on December 13, to march on the national capital.
They were stopped by a massive police presence and barricades at the Rewari border, and began an occupation of the highway. On December 31, some farmers broke through the barricades and were met by water cannons and tear gas.
The Wire's Raghu Karnad spoke to Vijoo Krishnan, leader of the All India Kisan Sabha, on the morning of December 13, 2020 – as he drove down to begin the ongoing, high-stakes blockade.
