Haryana Election: Farmer Distress And Problem Of Stray Cattle in Haryana

The BJP government led by Manohar Lal Khattar in Haryana had promised to make the state stray-cattle free by August 15, 2019. However, a visit to the state revealed the problem to have reached alarming proportions. Stray cattle roam the highways and streets and often cause accidents. They also lead to accidents, especially at night. Though people have opened some cow shelters, clearly these are not enough. Also, in the absence of adequate funding from the state government, the villagers are finding it difficult to sustain these by donating money or fodder.
Similarly, while the government recently announced a loan waiver scheme, many farmers said they have never benefited from one in the past. They also complained that they do not get any compensation if their crops get damaged. The issue of a four-fold increase in the price of fertilizers, reduction in their bag size by 10 percent and the presence of fake seeks in the market was also flagged by many.
