All Eyes on the Big Apple Mayoral Battle
As far as primary contests go, the New York Mayoral Race Democratic primary is very influential. Until current Mayor: Bill de Blasio took office in 2014, the big apple saw twenty consecutive years of Republican mayorship. Why is it then, that the Democratic primary is considered the race that will decide on the next Mayor? SOT Robert Shapiro, Columbia University Republican messaging no longer works in new york because the Republican Party, even in new york has become more like the National Republican Party being a highly Conservative Party, and elements of the party that have also become the trump party as well, which can do well nationally, but it cannot do well in new york. The Primary remains competitive with a diverse field of candidates. But the city that never sleeps isn't a monolith and though these candidates are Democrats, they differ on the issues that matter to New Yorkers running the gamut from very liberal to centrist. SOT Maya Wiley We have never had a mother is mayor. We have never had a black woman as mayor. We have never had a mayor that speaks to all the things that we need to do in this city, in a new and different way. No doubt the DNC will keep a close eye on the New York Democratic primary, to see what messaging and candidates are popular. Experts say, with rising crime rates in the city, there should be opportunities for different candidates to break through. Even if that's not happening right now. Shapiro that's where republicans can have an edge over democrats because they tend to be associated with a more, you know, a firmer, law and order type type position On the streets of New York, people are clear about what they want from their next Mayor. Patrick Hoover, the issues most important to me are that the needs people on the street that are really hurting those needs are addressed.I think their mental health issues that go along with that sometimes it's not just about food and shelter and so forth bump to David Johnson, Harlem, NY One big issue is, uh, a man walking around with a gun. We should address that first and figure out why those guns are coming in and who's bringing them in and put a stop to it. And then that will stop the murders on the streets of new york city. One thing is for sure, in a city getting back on it's feet post-pandemic, the next Mayor has a big job on their hands.
