Is Ed Markey The New Bernie Sanders?
Ed Markey, long overshadowed by his fellow Senator for Massachusetts Elizabeth Warren, has been making legislative waves since winning reelection in November. Local experts say, his primary win against Joe Kennedy III has given the Senator a new zeal. There are lots of comparisons between Markey and the more famous Bernie Sanders and we ask the question: is Markey Sanders' natural successor?

We speak with David Hopkins, associate professor of political science, Boston College and Anne Danehy, former Massachusetts political strategist and polling expert, now lecturer at Boston University.

LAST YEAR, SENATOR ED MARKEY DID WHAT WAS LONG THOUGHT IMPOSSIBLE: BEATING A KENNEDY IN MASSACHUSETTS.

LOCALS ARE REPORTING THAT SINCE HIS PRIMARY CHALLENGE, ED MARKEY IS MORE PRESENT IN THE STATE AND IN DC, HE'S PUSHING FORWARD BOLD AND OFTEN CONTROVERSIAL NEW LEGISLATION INTRODUCING A BILL THAT WOULD EXPAND THE SUPREME COURT AND THE GREEN NEW DEAL ALONGSIDE AOC.

David Hopkins ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, BOSTON COLLEGE

he's brought his, reputation that he had on the, on the inside as very policy focus legislator and translated that into a more prominentpublic reputation as a progressive champion. And that really has been the big change that we've seen.

THESE NEW BILLS DOING MARKEY NO FAVORS ON THE RIGHT, WITH MODERATE DEMS OR EVEN DEMOCRATIC LEDERSHIP. BUT AT 74, HE'S SUDDENLY FOUND HIMSELF POPULAR WITH YOUNG LIBERALS.

ANNE DANEHY, POLITICAL COMMS STRATEGIST, LECTURER BU

He has always been a progressive. But he became kind of like that Bernie Sanders character of the older person who seems like the young person.

BUT IS ED MARKEY THE NEW BERNIE SANDERS? EXPERTS SAY- PROBABLY NOT:

DAVID HOPKINS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, BOSTON COLLEGE
he hasn't had the interest in public attention that Sanders has had and I don't think he will be a Sanders figure in the sense of running for president as a way to become a national progressive champion.

SUCCESS IS FLEETING IN POLITICS- MARKEY RECENTLY CRITICISED BY OVER 500 PEOPLE IN HIS OWN CAMP: DONORS FORMER STAFF AND ENDORSING ORGANIZATIONS FOR HIS STANCE ON THE GAZA CONFLICT. THEY CALLED ON THE SENATOR TO TAKE A HARDER STAND AGAINST ISRAEL FOR IT'S ROLE IN THE ESCALATING VIOLENCE IN THE REGION.

AS FOR POLICY- IN A CLOSELY DIVIDED HOUSE AND SENATE, WHETHER HIS LEGISLATION IS PASSED-THAT'S STILL UP FOR DEBATE.
