Another topic of crucial importance is enlargement. Stability, prosperity, peace, reconciliation, the rule of law are of crucial importance for all of us in the EU. Both Albania and North Macedonia already delivered, that's why the EU has to deliver right now. We have to start accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia as soon as possible and I hope that we can solve bilateral problems on the bilateral level, not just the EU level.

The Council first prepares for the special European Council meeting on 24-25 May 2021, that will focus on the coordination of the EU response to COVID-19 and on external relations, with a strategic debate on Russia.

Furthermore, Ministers discuss on the state of play on the COVID-19 EU coordination and the vaccination campaign, the ongoing work on digital green certificates, and the epidemiological situation and on a common approach to the future gradual lifting of restrictions travel restrictions.

Ministers for European Affairs are also informed by the Presidency about the state of play regarding the Conference on the Future of Europe, following the formal inaugural event on 9 May in Strasbourg. The Conference on the Future of Europe is aimed at involving citizens in a wide-ranging debate on Europe’s future in the coming decade and beyond, including in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under any other business, the Council exchanges views on matters related to the Enlargement and Stabilisation and Association Process, and the EU-Switzerland relations.

EU Ministers of General Affairs meet, on 11 May 2021, in Brussels. The meeting is chaired by Ana Paula ZACARIAS, Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal. Ministers prepare for the special European Council meeting on 24-25 May 2021 and focus on the state of play on the COVID-19 EU coordination as well as on the Conference on the Future of Europe. Furthermore, the Council is informed about matters related to the Enlargement and Stabilisation and Association Process, and the EU-Switzerland relations.
