ANAHEIM — The ranks of the Angels’ walking wounded grew again. Their bench was so short-handed on Wednesday night, Albert Pujols was the only healthy position player not in the starting lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Third baseman Anthony Rendon, who hit a foul ball off his left knee in the eighth inning Monday, was placed on the 10-day injured list with a contusion. By backdating Rendon’s IL stint to Tuesday, he’ll be able to return as early as May 14.

Rendon had played only seven games since returning from a left groin strain. He collected hits in each of the last five, including a home run in his final at-bat Monday. Jose Rojas started at third base on Wednesday.

The Angels also recalled outfielders Taylor Ward and Juan Lagares from Triple-A. Both were in the starting lineup Wednesday – Ward in right field and Lagares in left. Jared Walsh got his second start at first base in the last two weeks on a day off for Pujols.

In another transaction, the Angels swapped one right-handed reliever for another by reinstating Mike Mayers and designating Ben Rowen for assignment. Rowen had allowed seven runs (three earned) in 11-1/3 innings across eight appearances this season. The 32-year-old journeyman was a non-roster invitation to spring training.

Outfielder Justin Upton and catcher Max Stassi were held out of the starting lineup with minor injuries. Upton declared himself “day to day” after fouling a ball off his knee Tuesday. Stassi collided with a stanchion pursuing a foul ball, but he was able to warm up Shohei Ohtani between innings.
GETTING DEFENSIVE
Upton said the Angels have adjusted his defensive positioning recently, stationing him in a more shallow spot in left field compared to the beginning of the season.

Maddon said adjustments like these are a normal part of the process in any season. For the Angels, defensive positioning has taken on added importance as both traditional and advanced metrics rank them among the worst fielding clubs in baseball.

“When it gets to zone ratings, things like that, defenders can look better or worse based on how well they’re positioned in the first place,” Maddon said. “All these things are tinkered with. All these things need to be looked at on a weekly basis, or bi-weekly basis, to see if there’s anything trending in a different direction, and we do.”
Through Tuesday, the Angels ranked 30th in Defensive Runs Saved (Sports Info Solutions’ advanced fielding metric), errors, fielding percentage, and defensive efficiency (the percentage of batted balls a team converts into outs).

Upton’s negative-6 DRS ranks last among all American League fielders at any position.

“There’s been a couple plays where (runners) have moved up,” Upton said. “We take pride in keeping runners to singles. There have been a couple situations where that hasn’t happened. As a group, these are conversations we have as a group. Something needs to change de
