In 2019, the PEOPLE of Hong Kong were awarded the McCain Public Affairs Leadership Medal for their brave fight for their rights in the face of oppression from Communist China.

The McCain Institute supports the people of Hong Kong in their ongoing quest to secure their freedom, democracy and independence, and joins Secretary of State Pompeo who said, “The United States condemns the arrest of pro-democracy advocates in Hong Kong.”

For almost a year, millions of people took to the streets to express their desire to remain an autonomous, self-governed city that is enshrined in their constitution.
