Who will become next Assam CM: Sonowal or Himanta?

For the very first time in Assam’s history, a non-Congress government returned to power, following the 2021 Assembly election. In the 126-member house, the ruling BJP-led alliance easily went past the halfway mark of 64 during the counting day of Assam assembly elections on Sunday.

Ahead of the ruling BJP-led alliance forming the next government in Assam, separate meetings were held with several newly-elected BJP MLAs in the residences of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Monday.

Speculations are doing rounds with regard to the confirmation of the next chief minister of Assam. Sources in the BJP, however, said both CM Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday held several meetings with their favourable MLAs and discussed their future course of action.

In Assam, the BJP and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) are in alliance.
