When copper mining was booming in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a vibrant and distinctive culture of music and dancing sprouted among miners who worked for state-owned giant Gecamines. The firm faded, and with it Jecoké music. Today, a handful of performers keep the style alive, hoping it will rise again as Gecamines tries to get to its feet.
