Candice van der Merwe is the daughter of the businessman Gary van der Merwe, who used her to defraud the Lebanese PM. He is well-known for evading taxes who has long-standing disputes with the IRS, and has been charged with criminal offenses. He was previously arrested while smuggling large sums in a suitcase through Cape Town's airport.
South African Revenue Service confirmed that the money was transferred on May 16, 2013 from Bankmed in Lebanon to Candice's account in South Africa, confirming that the money was transferred by Mohamed Nazih El Rawas.
But why did Hariri transfer 15 million US dollars disguised as a gift? The money was paid for commercial purposes not for emotional reasons, but why did Hariri pay it?
