Mangal Pandey's name has been etched in history as the man behind the events that led to the Indian rebellion of 1857. He was a sepoy in the Bengal Native Infantry, a regiment of the East India Company. The rebellion of 1857, starting with the Sepoy Mutiny, is considered as a first blow that came to shatter the British rule in India and the man behind it was none other than Mangal Pandey. He was born on July 19 in the year 1827. He was executed on April 8, 1857.

आज का दिन भारतीय इतिहास के साथ ही विश्व के इतिहास में भी काफी महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रखता है. देश में अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ आजादी की लड़ाई की पहली हुंकार भरने वाले सिपाही मंगल पांडे ने 8 अप्रैल 1857 को अपने प्राणों की आहुती दी थी. ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी की 34वीं बंगाल इंफेन्ट्री के जवान मंगल पांडे को आज ही के दिन फांसी की सजा दी गई थी. मंगल पांडे की ओर से शुरू किए अंग्रेजों के विरुद्ध लड़ाई पूरे देश में एक जंगल की आग की तरह फैल गई।
