Once popular, gamchha industry now on brink of extinction
  • 3 years ago
Languishing somewhere deep in Bengal’s western district of Birbhum lies Tantipara, a quaint village of handloom weavers on the borders of the Jangalmahal region. Travelling hawkers selling gamchhas (red-coloured towels) have been a common sight on trains passing through the region over the years but seen lesser nowadays.
Ewoke.TV set out on a mission to track down the village which churns out the famous loom. The village sits pretty with entire neighbourhoods comprising houses where handloom has been a cottage industry over the generations.
