New Mexico Expected to
Legalize Recreational Marijuana .
On Wednesday, New Mexico’s Legislature
passed a bill to legalize recreational marijuana. .
Once signed by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham,
New Mexico will become the 16th state to do so.
In a statement, Gov. Grisham signaled
her intent to sign the bill and called its
passing a “significant victory.”.
With this major step forward, we are
signaling more clearly than ever before
that we are ready, as a state, to truly
break new ground, to think differently
about ourselves and our economic future,
to fearlessly invest in ourselves and in
the limitless potential of New Mexicans, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, via statement.
Under this bill, people
over the age of 21 will be
permitted to possess up to
two ounces of marijuana. .
Individuals will be able to have six cannabis
plants at home and up to 12 per household. .
Marijuana sales will begin no later than
April 2022, with taxes beginning at 12 percent
and eventually rising to 18 percent. .
New Mexico’s cannabis industry is expected to
create $20 million in revenue for the state in 2023,
as well as $10 million for local governments.
Most importantly, the bill calls for the
expungement of criminal records for people
with low-level marijuana convictions, such
as personal possession. .
