PR expert Jennifer Farmer turned her boss's racist comments into a relatable guide for Black women

Public relations specialist Jennifer Farmer shares her new book, “First and Only: A Black Woman's Guide to Thriving at Work and in Life," an idea that grew out of negative feedback she received at the office, including being told to say “no” nicely.

“It was very depressing and I kept thinking, ‘Okay, something is wrong with me.' I grew up thinking that I was supposed to be assertive, but that is not what most workplaces want. ’” Farmer said on “Salon Talks.” Through journaling, reflection and talking to other women, Farmer identified the racialized and gendered comments and put in work to heal herself and help other Black women do the same.

Watch the episode to hear Farmer’s advice, from how she dealt with comments about her hair, to the ways in which she thinks non-Black colleagues and Black men can step up to support Black women.
