The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Centre on a petition challenging the validity of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act 1991. This law introduced on July 11, 1991, placed a status quo retrospectively on the character of places of worship as existing on the date of Independence, i.e. August 15, 1947.

पूजा स्थल विशेष प्रावधान अधिनियम 1991 को चुनौती देने वाली याचिका पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट सुनवाई को तैयार हो गया है. सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने इस मसले पर केंद्र सरकार को नोटिस जारी कर जवाब मांगा है. दरअसल, बीजेपी नेता अश्विनि उपाध्याय ने इस एक्ट की संवैधानिक वैधता को चुनौती दी है, और इसे मौलिक अधिकारों का उल्लंघन बताया है. उन्होंने पूजास्थल कानून-1991 की धारा 2, 3 और 4 को संविधान का उल्लंघन बताते हुए इन्हें रद्द करने की मांग की है.
