The First Black Player Drafted in the NBA

On Episode 11 of the A-List Podcast Sherrod Blakely and Kwani A. Lunis are joined by Chuck Cooper III to discuss his father's legacy as the first Black player drafted in the NBA. The most fascinating topic, not talked about enough and perfect for Black History Month. The Boston Celtics picked Cooper in the 1950 NBA Draft and he did not make the Basketball Hall of Fame until 2019. Cooper also served for the Navy in World War II and played for the Harlem Globetrotters. When Celtics owner Walter Brown considered drafting Cooper against the wishes of other NBA officials, he said: "I don't give a damn if he's striped, plaid or polka dot. Boston takes Charles Cooper of Duquesne." Cooper III discussed his dad's legacy, the push to get him into the hall and more with A. Sherrod Blakely and Kwani Lunis.
