The Andrew Eborn Show The Truth About Royals & Saints at The Tower of London with Canon Roger J Hall, Queen's Chaplain
  • 3 years ago
Chaplain: The Reverend Canon Roger Hall MBE

Execution inside the Tower was a privilege reserved for those of high rank, or for those who had dangerously strong popular support, to keep them away from the gawping crowds.

The most well known among those executed on or near Tower Green were three former queens of England. Two of those queens were wives of Henry VIII.

Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry VIII, was in her early 30s and Catherine Howard, Henry's fifth wife, was barely in her 20s. Both were accused of adultery, but neither may have been guilty.

The third queen to meet her end within the Tower was 16-year-old Lady Jane Grey. She was on the throne for just nine days, and was the innocent pawn in a failed military coup by her father-in-law, the Duke of Northumberland.

After growing up in Shropshire, the Reverend Canon Roger Hall attended school in Liverpool, after which he took up training for the Priesthood in Lincoln. Having spent his curacy back in Shropshire, Canon Hall joined the British Army as a chaplain in 1987. For the first twelve years of his army career, Canon Hall spent most of the time as an operational chaplain, serving in places such as Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo and East Timor.
For two years, Canon Hall was chaplain to the Household Division and the Guards Chapel, which he describes as both 'an interesting and demanding time'. After this posting, he returned to Germany as Senior Chaplain before being appointed Assistant Chaplain General, which led to four years in Edinburgh.

In 2007, having resigned his Commission, Canon Hall became a chaplain to the Queen and Chaplain to HM Tower of London. As well as his role at HM Tower of London, he is also Chaplain to Bacon's College (a city Academy), five livery companies and the East India Club. Canon Hall is also a Trustee of Chapter 1 - a housing trust based in the City of London.

Married to Barbara with three grown up children and four granddaughters, Canon Hall supports Liverpool Football Club, skis and loves good food, wine, books and music. Travelling and interesting conversation also come high on his list of priorities.

Charles Spencer "It’s rare to find an interviewer who’s done such a phenomenal amount of homework - thank you @AndrewEborn for such a dynamic interview. "

"Quite simply, Andrew Eborn is a genius. Despite having fingers in more pies than Mr. Ginster, he manages to juggle all his interests and epitomise success. Entrepreneur, TV host, magician and bon viveur, I'm not sure how he measures failure as he's never failed at anything - but if you want advice on how to succeed Eborn's the man."

Ian Freeman, Treasurer, Royal Variety Charity, nephew of legendary impresarios Leslie Grade and (Lord) Lew Grade and theatre producer (Lord) Bernard Delfont.

" Brilliant buzzing & fun!" Ed Hood
