Farmers Use Toxic Drain Water in Delhis Mungeshpur, Area Registers Rise in Cancer Cases
  • 3 years ago
Risking their lives, farmers in Mungeshpur village in Delhi are using toxic water coming from Mungeshpur drain, one of the longest in north-west Delhi and part of Najafgarh basin, for growing vegetables due to lack of groundwater for farming and to save money spent on buying fertilisers and urea. The water flowing from this channel has become completely poisonous due to the presence of industrial effluents in it. Speaking on the growing cases of cancer in the area, Dr Ajay Dabas said, “We're running a cancer awareness campaign. In last 6 months, we found 10-12 fresh cases of cancer, here. We got to know that water from a dirty drain is being used to grow vegetables and this might be the reason for cancer growing cases here.”
