Since May 2019, teams of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, or Frontex, have been working with Albania's police to patrol its land and sea borders for migrants and crime.Johansson, who was expected to later go to meet them in person at the Albanian-Greek border, hailed Albania's "remarkable" progress, adding that country's rule of law institutions were in close cooperation with the bloc.

Fifty officers, 16 patrol cars and one thermo-vision van from 12 EU member countries have been deployed along the Albania-Greece border with no time limit or fixed mandate to the cooperation.Albania is not a preferred route for migrants, but some enter the tiny Western Balkan country to move toward Northern Europe.

Last year the EU gave the green light to Albania and North Macedonia for the launch of full membership negotiations, but no date has been set yet for the first inter-governmental meeting.Albania will hold its parliamentary election on April 25.

Meta meets with European Commissioner for Home Affairs: After April 25, organized crime will take a toll. President Ilir Meta received today in a meeting the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Mrs. Ylva Johansson.

After the meeting, Meta announced that he underlined the importance of holding free and fair elections for Albania's European path.

"It is a pleasure to meet today with the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Mrs. Ylva Johansson. An open and fruitful conversation on the urgent challenges of Albania's European path.

I thanked him for the comprehensive support that the EU gives to our country, including the prevention and management of illegal immigration through cooperation with FRONTEX.

I stressed the importance of holding free and fair elections for Albania's European path.

"After the elections of April 25, 2021, organized crime will receive a decisive blow and Albania will return to the tracks of the rule of law and full respect for human rights", writes Meta after the meeting.
