What leads to breaking up of Glaciers and what happens after that?| Oneindia News

Glaciers are made up of fallen snow that, over many years, compresses into large, thickened ice masses. Glaciers form when snow remains in one location long enough to transform into ice. The glacier break in Uttarakhand's chamoli has unleashed havoc with several missing after being washed away. But why do glaciers break? Glaciers can break due to multiple reasons like, erosion, the build-up of water pressure, an avalanche of snow or rocks, and also an earthquake under the ice. It can also happen if there is a massive displacement of water in the glacial area when a large portion of an adjacent glacier collapses.
