USA: One of the worst side effects of the AIDS drug AZT can be surpassed by another drug called EPO. According to Dr. David Henry of the University of California, anemia is surprisingly already a common complication of AIDS, but also when AZT is given the anemia commonly worsens and a transfusion may be needed. Scientists predict that if 100,000 patients received AZT in the early 1990s, 40,000 could develop anemia severe enough to require frequent blood transfusions. Thus, the demand to the national blood bank already over-required could amount to 1 million units per year but the genetically obtained version of the EPO hormone could solve this problem of anemia in AIDS patients by ingesting it 3 times a week.
