Fifty days after the Easter celebrations, Pentecost (Shabu’ot) is celebrated in Jerusalem. The eleven apostles and a hundred or so of Jesus’ disciples meet for the occasion at Mark’s house. They all elect Matthias to occupy the place left vacant by Judas. Anxiety about the future - combined with the expectancy of Jesus’ return - is dispelled by a prodigious event: the Holy Spirit descends on Mark’s house and enters the Apostles, who are filled with renewed vigour. They cast aside their fears and leave their hideaway to begin preaching. On that same day, Peter and the other Apostles baptise hundreds of people in the stream called Cedron. Among these is a young man who begins to tell the story of Jesus’ disciples, the spread of his word in the world, the conversion and apostolate of Saul, his journey to Rome...
