Brazilian wetland is burning in winter! Do you believe that?

Here we are past the middle of the year, at the end of winter, the dry season in the Amazon and Pantanal regions. And, as is tradition when the government faction is not socialist, environmental criticism begins. Every year in July and August the number of fires in both the Amazon and Pantanal regions typically increases due to the arrival of the dry season. Less rain, drier vegetation, fires start more easily. Farmers in the region take advantage of this to clear land for farming. This is how agriculture is practiced in the region since long before Europeans arrived in Brazil, the old name for what is now called Bananaland. Typically, fire activity peaks in early September and mostly stops by November.
